Carthage

Carthage began as a Phoenician colony, became a powerful city in the Mediterranean. However, after the third Punic war, Carthage was destroyed by Rome. Today it is a quiet suburb of Tunis.

Carthage’s power came from the sea. It was a major trading port, as well as having a powerful naval fleet. This view shows the remains of the old naval port, a semi-circular port with an island in the middle.

The island used to be the dock for many many war ships. However, most of these have been covered up over the centuries.

Today, the naval port is a quiet inlet in the suburb of Carthage.
