Medenine
From Tunis, I traveled south by train to Sfax (where I stayed a night) and then by louage (inter-city shared taxi) to Medenine.
The main site to visit in Medenine is the Ksar. This is the entrance into it.
The Ksar is a traditional Berber granary.
The Ksar is built in a large square, facing inwards, with only one entrance. This is so they can defend their granery from other tribes.
This Ksar is still inuse to store things, not necessarily grain.
Some of them (especially the ones near the entrance) have been converted into shops selling souveniers to tourists.
This is outside Ksar Medenine, behind its northern wall.
However, the interesting bit is the other side of the alley.
These were used in Star Wars Episode I as the outside of Anakin’s home.
Of course it looks a bit different in the movie. The ground was covered in sand, the doors were replaced, and a sandstorm was blowing.
The dark brown door leads to Anakin’s home.
The other end of the building. This end can be seen in the scenes where Anakin says goodbye to his mother.
Around the corner is a set of Ghorfas being restored and being turned into hotels.
There is also a small museum here.
As we leave Medenine, here are some photos of the local streets. This street is the vegetable market.
And this one with hardware, music, and clothing shops.
This is one of the main streets in Medenine. Next stop Tataouine.
