Geysers

One of the attractions on the “Golden Circle” are the geysers in the Haukadalur valley area.

Geysers are caused by magma near the earth’s surface and the right geological conditions. Surface water is heated until it becomes steam, which creates the pressure that causes the geyser to errupt.

The English word “geyser” comes from the Icelandic “Geysir” meaning “one who gushes”. Geysir the name of a particular geyser. It is also called Great Geysir, because it was one of the highest errupting geysers in the world. But these days, Geysir is dormant and only errupts irregularly.

Strokkur

Strokkur is a geyser that is 130 metres south of Geysir.

Strokkur is a popular attraction, because it regularly errupts every 5-10 minutes.
